Erica Levin’s research focuses on the intersection between avant-garde cinema, post-war art, documentary, performance, and visual culture to study the mediation of political events and contested spaces. She serves as the Head of Film Studies with a courtesy appointment in the Department of Theatre, Film, and Media Art. Her book, The Channeled Image: Art and Media Politics After Television (Chicago University Press, 2022) examines new formal strategies artists and filmmakers developed in the 1960s to challenge television’s claims to authority during a period of profound political unrest. Her writing has been published in Media-N, World Picture, Camera Obscura, Docalogue, Discourse, and Millennium Film Journal, and in the collections Hybrid Practices: Art in Collaboration with Science and Technology in the Long 1960s; Carolee Schneemann: Unforgivable; Artists Respond: American Art and the Vietnam War, 1965–1975; and A Companion to Experimental Cinema. Her recent essay, “To assemble is to think through this world: Narrative Desire in the Films of Ana Vaz,” appears in Afterimage.
