In The Moors, playwright Jen Silverman remains true to the style of 18th-century gothic novels while simultaneously reinventing and modernizing the genre using dark humor, unconventional romance, and fantasy. Inspired by the work of the Brontë sisters, Silverman creates a world where women can achieve power and independence, and her female characters are in tune with their sexuality and emotional well-being in a way that would have been impossible in Victorian England. Silverman’s exploration of agency also extends beyond women to include other groups typically seen as powerless, like servants and animals. The play follows Emilie, a governess, who soon realizes she is not in the position she thought she was hired for and that those who surround her may not be honest about their identities. In a play where nothing and no one is as it seems, we see how seclusion can lead to desperation, danger, and depression. Deep in the heart of the isolated, dark, and lonely English moors, Silverman illustrates the ways that characters’ surroundings reflect their inner lives and emotional states. The residents of the moors have been changed by the land that keeps them sequestered from the rest of the world. As you step into a solitary landscape that can make a person desperate for power and connection no matter the cost, you begin to see how our environment and emotional well-being are so tightly intertwined. Bit by bit, as the secrets of moorland mansion are unveiled, Silverman masterfully guides audience members on a haunting journey through the places we call home.
Take this short quiz to determine which character you'd be in The Moors.
Stick around after the performance on Saturday, November 9th for a post-show discussion about the play's themes and contemporary relevance with the director, dramaturg, and Dr. Amanpal Garcha from the Department of English.
This production includes the use of strobe lights and fog. It also includes moments of graphic staged violence with blood, staged intimacy, references to suicidal ideation, and references to nonconsensual intimacy.
