Alum Designs "For Colored Girls" Revival

Toni-Leslie James

Department of Theatre Alum Toni-Leslie James (BFA '79) designed costumes for Leah C. Gardiner's well-received revival of Ntozake Shange's For Colored Girls Who Have Considered Suicide/When the Rainbow Is Enuf at the Public Theater.

James's savvy design features the faces of the many actors who have the parts in previous productions, the women who inspired the stories, and the female relatives of the cast members, connecting the production to the past and sending ripples through the present.

James is a Tony-nominated designer and a member of the School of Drama faculty at Yale.
