The purpose of the Department of Theatre’s chapter of Alpha Psi Omega (APO), a national theatre honor society, is to help students develop their skills for future success in theatre, to foster their talents, and to expand on personal interests in theatre and the creative arts. APO hosts many events throughout the year, including workshops on topics like Finding an Internship, Audition Strategies, and Improvisation led by graduate students, faculty, and special guests; Skype Sessions with industry professionals (and OSU alumni) currently in LA and NYC; Backstage Live (a year-in-review variety performance); breakfast during finals, and many others.
This project is an annual event, created and run entirely by students in the Department of Theatre. Each spring, students submit movement pieces, scenes, songs, and monologues for an evening performance. An ensemble of student performers then compiles these pieces to create each year's Backstage Live production, which is presented on the evening of the Department's end-of-the-year celebration. All proceeds collected from the show are donated to an AIDS charity organization. Anyone can join the Backstage Live student ensemble. This event is a great way for actors and writers to showcase their work while supporting an important cause.
Twenty Four Hour Theatre
This event takes place annually every spring semester and invites participants to write, direct, and act in original pieces all within a crazy 24 hour time frame. Writers show up at the kickoff of the event and are given a theme or line of text to inspire their work. This folds into an overnight sleepover in the Drake Center where work continues, with plenty of breaks for food, conversation, and movie watching. The next morning, directors and actors gather to read scripts and select which will be presented. The rest of the day is spent rehearsing, eating pizza, and preparing for the show that happens—ready or not!—at 7 PM. All are welcome to participate! While the performance itself is free, APO collects donations, with all proceeds going to Camp Sunrise.
