Media Production and Analysis Minor


The interdisciplinary minor in Media Production and Analysis provides students with an understanding of the societal impact of contemporary media practices and provides opportunities to develop specific media production skills. Students will both analyze and produce media content for distribution through a variety of means.

Coursework for the Media Production and Analysis Minor

The Media Production and Analysis Minor requires the completion of five courses for at least 15 credit hours, including four foundational courses. Students must take courses from both the School of Communication and Department of Theatre, Film, and Media Arts. Overlap with the GE is permitted. If one or more of the foundational courses are counted toward a major, these courses must be replaced with additional courses from the list of electives. You must file your minor program with a program advisor.

No more than 3 hours of 4191 or 5189 can be applied to the minor.

Required Foundational Courses (9 credit hours)

Select one course from each of the three Foundational Areas listed below for a total of 3 courses:

Foundational Area 1: Media and Criticism

  • Comm 2540 - Intro to Communication Technology (3 credits)
  • Theatre 2367.03 - Criticizing Television (3 credits)

Foundational Area 2: News and Production Practicum

  • Comm 2223 - Lantern Practicum (4 credits)
  • Theatre 3351 – Television Production 1 (3 credits)

Foundational Area 3: Field Studies

  • Comm 4191 - Internship (1-3 credits)
  • Theatre 5189 - Fieldwork in Theatre, Cinema or Video (1-3 credits)
  • Theatre 4191 - Internship (1-3 credits)

Electives (6 credit hours at minimum)

Media Production and Analysis Minor Program Guidelines

The following guidelines govern this minor:

  • A minor is not required for graduation
  • Credit hours required: A minimum of 15
  • Transfer credit hours allowed: A maximum of 6
  • Overlap with the: GE Permitted
  • Overlap with the major: The minor must be in a different subject than the major. The same courses cannot count on the minor and on the major.
  • Overlap between minors: Each minor completed must contain 15 unique hours.

Grades Required

  • Minimum C- for a course to be listed on the minor.
  • Minimum 2.00 cumulative point-hour ratio required for the minor.
  • Course work graded Pass/Non-Pass cannot count on the minor.
  • The minor must contain 6 credit hours at the 3000-level or above.

How to Declare a Minor in Media Production and Analysis

The minor program description sheet indicates if the minor course work must be approved by the academic unit offering the minor. Contact Janet Parrott (Program Advisor and Associate Professor) for more information.

Filing the Minor Program Form

The Minor Program Form must be filed at least by the time the graduation application is submitted to a college/school counselor.

Changing the Minor

Once the minor program is filed in the college office, any changes must be approved by the academic unit offering the minor.
